Once there was a time without memes and during a moment of boredom, I created a Tumblr which crowdsourced pics of the funny typos and street signs in Sri Lanka and shared them on Twitter. It became wildly popular for 15 minutes, resulted in some press, and even a meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank.

Since the grown-ups wouldn’t give us what we wanted, we created our own music in the 1990s. A bunch of us, who were still in high school, formed a crew called Rudeboy Republic and pioneered rap music on the island. I also co-produced ‘The Colombo Tribe Project’ – a compilation album of the first underground artists, who were emerging at the same time.

Pretty chuffed to be on the ‘Kitchen Beats’ compilation album with a twist – the songs feature sounds created in real kitchens by some of Singapore’s finest musicians and artists. Hear stoves lighting, knives being sharpened, clanging pots, and even onions thudding. All proceeds from these recordings go to the UN World Food Programme.
